Reading and Writing

I am a firm believer that all children can be taught to read and write. My passion is to have my students reading and writing when they walk out of my classroom. In my classroom, we have guided reading groups that focus on specific strategies to help your child learn to read. We also have writing workshop where your child writes about his or her experiences. Our writing workshop consists of a mini lesson followed by independent writing and then a time to share with the class. The focus lessons are based on the works of Lucy Calkins.

During the last few weeks, we have studied a unit on nonfiction writing. We have studied the nonfiction text features such as title, author, heading, table of contents, captions, photographs, etc. These text features have helped students write their books. Students wrote a How-To book and will begin an All About book. Students have, and will continue to work on their All About Books to share. We will complete these books by the end of May.
