Would you like to be a Fluency Friend? In as little as 30 minutes a week, you can change the life of a young child by listening to them read. Contact the office at 517-263-9002.
The 2017-18 school year is well under way! Teachers, community volunteers and families have gotten our students off to a great start. Several programs are continuing at Michener Elementary this year.
Fluency Friends come daily to read with our students. These community leaders spend their lunch and break times reading with our children to help them improve their reading skills. The children love their time reading with an encouraging adult.
Lunch buddies has begun. Students get to eat lunch with an adult mentor who engages with them. This program has proven to support behavior and academics.
A huge thank you to our Foster Grandma’s who spend hours and hours in our classrooms guiding students through their academic day. They are able to assist the students in practicing math facts, reading and writing. They are an invaluable source of support for our students.
Good nutrition and healthy living is supported at Michener. With grant monies provided through our Food Service Department, our students receive a healthy fruit or vegetable snack each day. Our gym teacher has received a grant to bring “Jump With Jill” to our building. This energetic assembly will encourage our students to exercise and eat healthy. MSU Extension is again providing classroom lessons on nutrition with food tastings...yum!
We are pleased to provide breakfast and lunch for all of our students again this year under the Universal Breakfast and Lunch program. Breakfast service begins at 8:10 each morning.
I am so honored to be able to work with such dedicated families, staff and volunteers.
Michener Elementary is a neighborhood school with an enrollment of 275-300 students. We serve children from Young 5's through 5th grade. With an on-site Head Start program, our littlest learners are able to prepare for school. Our students all have the opportunity to attend Music, Art, Gym, Spanish and Technology classes each week. Our highly qualified teachers and staff take pride in providing a safe, caring environment where our students can learn and grow.
Michener staff and students have embraced Maple Pride, our district-wide positive behavior support plan. Positive behavior expectations are taught and modeled throughout the day. Students engaging in positive behavior are celebrated!
Due to the support of APS voters who passed a bond in 2016, Michener has received many improvements. Classroom and building technology has been upgraded to support our students' learning. Two rooms have been remodeled so they can serve as our 5th grade classrooms and a collaborative workspace. Around the building and grounds there are upgrades and repairs to windows, doors, fencing and storage. The newly paved parking lot will provide a safe place for parents to drop-off and pick-up children who do not ride the bus.
