Michener Elementary has an enrollment of 275-300 students. A great deal of research suggests that smaller schools contribute to student's achievement, attainment and a sense of well-being. A growing body of literature suggests that downsizing can have a positive effect on attendance, behavior, satisfaction with school, greater self-esteem..and a feeling of community.
Michener is implementing the Daily 5 reading framework during our literacy block. Teachers gradually build this learning structure into their classrooms, with explicit teaching and practicing of routines and procedures that foster independent and meaningful reading practice, while teachers meet with individuals and small groups of children.
Michener also provides our first-fourth grade students with 30-45 minutes of differentiated reading instruction each day so individual academic growth in reading is accelerated. This is in addition to the Daily 5 reading framework.
Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, collaborative teams of teachers gather evidence of student learning in mathematics through frequent common assessments. These assessments provide vital information that fuels our school’s system of interventions and enrichment. This intervention/enrichment process (called M & M), ensures that our students receive additional time and support for learning, as students are required, rather than invited, to utilize our system of support during their school day.
Michener staff and students have embraced Maple Pride, our district and school-wide positive behavioral support plan. All building and bus expectations are taught and positively acknowledged every day at Michener, and student success is celebrated.
Due to the support of APS voters in the passing of the May 2016 bond proposal, Michener will receive classroom and building technology upgrades, the remodeling of two “team” rooms into classrooms with furnishing and equipment to accommodate 5th graders returning to Michener, added fencing to improve student safety, as well as replacing classroom doors, locks, plate glass and exterior doors and windows. Our parking lot will also be paved with improved storm drainage.
