Welcome to Second Grade!

Dear Families,

Welcome to second grade!  I'm looking forward to a wonderful year of learning with your child.  This newsletter will give you some beginning information about our classroom.

Daily Folders   Green Spiral Notebook

Second graders will be using a Daily Folder this year.  This will give us an opportunity to communicate daily as needed.  Please be sure that this comes back to school each day in your child's backpack.  Homework will come home as needed and should be returned to school in your child's Daily Folder.

Every Thursday, students will bring home their work from the week in a two gallon Ziplock bag.  This will give you an opportunity to review with your child some of the concepts we've been working on.  Please be sure that your child'sZiplock bag is returned on Friday.

Every Monday, students will bring home a new spelling list and dictation sentences.  Much of our Language Arts work for the week will involve this list.  Please help your child study the spelling work throughout the week.  There will be a test on the list and dictation sentences each Friday.

At the beginning of every month, a Reading Log will be placed in your child's Daily Folder.  Please fill in the amount of time read each night.  Students are asked to set a reading goal for themselves and then try to reach this goal by reading at home every night.  Students may read individually, with a friend, sibling, grandparent, or parent.  This will be graded as homework.  Students will be encouraged to read non-fiction material, as this is a standard set for second graders.

Second graders are responsible for reading all second grade Dolch Words by the end of the year.  They are also responsible for reading and spelling all Must Know Words.  These words will be introduced throughout the school year.  Please practice these words at home with your child.  They can be found at the top of our weekly schedule in your child's Daily Folder each week.

Birthday Treats and Snacks   Birthday Cupcakee

Birthday treats are always welcome!  Please let me know in advance if you are interested in celebrating your child's birthday with a treat by sending an email, or written note.  Don't forget napkins or any other utensils/supplies that may be needed!  Birthday party invitations may be handed out at school only if there is an invitation for every member of our class.  If not all students are invited, I ask that you mail your child's invitations from home.

I strongly encourage students to bring in a snack each day.  Our days can get long without taking a nutritious snack break.  A snack such as fruit, cheese, crackers, or vegetables, will help your child to concentrate and do quality work throughout the day.  We will be learning about good nutrition as it is part of the Health Model and is part of our PYP Unit later in the school year.  Please support our studies by not sending in sweet snacks or junk food.

I encourage students to bring in water bottles to have available at their seats during work time.  Please be sure that water bottles are free from leaks and sweating.  This is especially helpful when the weather is warm!

Library Books   Books and Backpack

Students will have the opportunity to check out two "Just Right" books from our library each week.  Students are responsible for keeping these books in a safe place at all times.  I encourage students to keep their books in their backpacks when going home each night.  These books should remain in their backpacks and brought into the classroom each day.  Sometimes our library schedule will change and students may not check out new books unless their previous books have been returned.

Supplies   Red Scissors

All supplies are provide for students such as glue sticks, scissors, pencils, etc.  Our classroom has a supply list of items that we seem to always be in need of.  Items included on this list are Wet Wipes, Kleenex, paper towels, colored pencils, and large glue sticks.  Your donation is greatly appreciated!

A change of clothing in a Ziplock (appropriate for season) should be provided and kept in your child's locker in case of an accident.  This will help to keep interruptions in our work day to a minimum!

Please keep in touch.  Any questions or concerns that you may have can be discussed in a note sent to school with your child, email, or with a phone call before or after school.  I will also be happy to set up an appointment with you.

I'm truly looking forward to getting to know you and your child.  It will be a wonderful year!

 Your Teacher,

Jodie Paster
