December 5th, 2014

This week: The PYP Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works, was recently concluded. The students used a graphic organizer to tell what new objects they wanted added to the Beal Outdoor Classroom. After that was finished, they turned the graphic organizer into a paragraph, with each new object being a sentence. They had to justify their reasoning as to why they wanted that in our outdoor learning space. For example: “I think we should add a greenhouse so that our flowers can grow in the winter and stay warm.”

The next PYP unit will start next week. It is called Who We Are.  We will be talking about family histories and heritage. There will be a letter that comes home explaining everything and you will be asked to send in an ARTIFACT. We would like it to be something of importance that represents who your son or daughter is and the heritage your family comes from. I promise we will keep the artifacts safe! The children will know not to touch any of them! J

Some of the Math we have been working on has been challenging for the students. I completely understand the parent’s frustration and confusion as well. We have been making ten when one of the addends is 8 or 9. Example: 9 + 5 = ___ . They have to make a math drawing, borrow one from the 5 and add it to the 9 to make 10. So the new math equation would be 10 + 4 = ___ . Wow! They are unbelievable as mathematicians!

Looking ahead…: Winter is officially upon us L. Please pack boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, etc. If your child needs any of these items, please be sure to send me a note, or call the office.

Looking WAY ahead: Winter break starts after school on Friday, December 19th. School will resume on Monday, January 5th, 2015! I can’t believe how fast the year is going!

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Thank you for taking the time out of your daily lives to sit and talk about your child and their school lives. The support, both behaviorally and academically, that you all give at home is very helpful. Thank you for asking questions about things you are unsure of! Please continue to do so.

**If the conference time didn’t work for you, or you missed it, please email, call, or write a note informing me of a time that works for you to meet. I would love to tell you about your child’s progress! J

Reflective: This is the Learner Profile Trait that our focus is on for the month of December. Our definition of “reflective” is: I think about and learn from my mistakes and success. Please let us know how your son or daughter is being reflective outside of school. I love to hear stories from home!

Drops in the Bucket:. A “Drop in the Bucket” means that they got caught doing something nice for someone else, or they did their very best work. Some (but not all) of the drops from our class include: London Rising for great writing, Elijah Rice for great writing, Amani Lozada for great writing.

New pictures added from our Thanksgiving Feast and Turkey hat making! J
