The Daily Five

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading and math block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy and math tasks.  These research-based tasks will have the biggest effect on student reading, writing, and math achievement.  Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to improve reading, writing and math strategies independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.

Students will be engaged in the Daily Five Reading, which is made up of the following:  Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Word Work, and Work With Teacher.  Students will be engaged in the Daily Five Math, which is made up of the following:  Math by Myself, Math With Someone, Math With Writing, Math on Computer, Math With Teacher.

There are very specific behavior components for each of the Daily Five Reading and Math blocks.  Students will build responsibility for their learning, increase stamina in their reading, writing and math work, and gain independence while building a sense of community in our classroom. The Daily Fives allow me to spend time to learn about your child's strengths and greatest needs in order to best plan for individual instruction.

One thing you may notice is a decrease in the number of worksheets your child brings home.  Students will spend most of their time learning and practicing new reading and math strategies through appropriate leveled reading and hands on activities.  Your child's work will be documented in their Daily Five Reading and Math Folders.

I am excited about implementing the Daily Fives in my classroom this year and giving your child opportunity to be involved in a structure that will have such a positive effect on their education.

Thank your for your support!
