As we look forward to the start of the 16-17 school year, I want to remind and inform you of some initiatives taking place at Alexander. For the 14-15 school year, we were identified as a Focus School. Focus Schools are those with the largest achievement gaps, defined as the difference between the average scale score for the top 30 percent of students and the bottom 30 percent of students as compared to the rest of the state. It should also be noted that Alexander, even though it has an achievement gap, continues to be one of the highest overall performing schools in the county and the state. This designation required us to consult with the State of Michigan on a number of things including:
*Our school improvement plan and process.
*How we collect student data and how we use this to improve instruction.
*How we service our highest needs students to support success.
I also want to emphasize that all of the requirements listed above will continue to make us a better school and provide even greater opportunities for our students.
As a focus school, we will continue to work on these improvements. While we are optimistic that our instructional efforts that took place last year will help close the gap, the Michigan Department of Education has not released the scores on the State Assessment that was given in April and May of last year. I want to remind you that we have many positive happenings in the school including:
*Our reading scores increased in 4 out of 5 grade levels, as based on nationally normed testing (NWEA)
*We continue to offer enrichment and remedial support as well as a wide array of engaging opportunities through partnerships with the YMCA, Siena Heights University, Adrian College, and the City of Adrian.
Our commitment to ensure the success of all students, whether we are a Reward School or Focus school remains strong. We look forward to partnering with the State of Michigan to look for ways to make our programming even better. And as always, should you have questions, please feel free to contact me personally.
